ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY

Sorin Lerescu was born in Craiova, Romania, on 14 November 1953. 

He graduated in composition at the National University of Music in Bucharest in 1979, where he studied with Tiberiu Olah, Anatol Vieru. (composition), Ștefan Niculescu (musical analysis), Alexandru Pașcanu (harmony), Liviu Comes (counterpoint), Nicolae Beloiu (orchestration). Postgraduated studies with: Gayle Mosand, at Dragvoll University in Trondheim (Norway), in 1983, Ton de Leeuw (The Nertherlands), Brian Ferneyhough (UK), Morton Feldman (US), at Georg Büchner Schule, Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt (Germany), in 1984. 
He earned his PhD at the 'Gheorghe Dima' Music Academy of Cluj-Napoca in 1999 with Ede Terenyi. 

In 1982 he founded the TRAIECT Ensemble (ATM Prize in 1983) which presented to the public, both at home and abroad, a large number of contemporary works, covering a broad spectrum of styles and aesthetic trends characteristic to the new music. President of the Romanian Section of ISCM between 2003-2013. Member of SACEM (France) and of the Board of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists (since 2010).

Director and co-director of the INTERNATIONAL WEEK OF NEW MUSIC Bucharest (20042009). Director of the MERIDIAN, ISCM-Romanian Section International Festival Bucharest (2005-2012). He has been invited to participate in major festivals of contemporary music: Trondheim, Darmstadt, Tallinn, Rome, Paris, Warsaw, Chisinau, Belgrade, Cluj, Gent, Bucharest, Braila, Budapest, Odessa, Reggio Emilia, Minsk, Plovdiv, Sofia, Curitiba, ISCM World Music Days: Romania / Republic of Moldova 1999, Slovenia 2003, Switzerland 2004, Croatia 2005, Germany 2006, Hong Kong 2007, Lituania 2008, Sweden 2009, Australia 2010, Croatia 2011, Belgium 2012. 

In october 2001 Sorin Lerescu was invited as a composition professor at the Istituto Musicale 'Achille Peri' in Reggio Emilia (Italy). In november 2003 he was a member of the International Composition Jury of the 'Valentino Bucchi' Competition in Rome, as well as invited professor (master class in composition). Member of International Jury of the ISCM-CASH Young Composition Award 2006 in Stuttgart (Germany). In 2008 he was invited as a composition professor at the Faculty of Music, West University of Timisoara. President of the International Jury of composition in Plovdiv (in 2008), member of the International Jury of composition in Sofia (Bulgaria), in 2010 and 2013, and in Curitiba (Brazil), in 2011.

The Prize of the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists for chamber music (2003), The Romanian Academy's 2003 'George Enescu' Award for Musical Creation, The Cultural Merit, Bucharest (2004). 

Several of his works have been published by Editura Muzicala in Bucharest, CARCIOFOLI Verlagshaus in Zürich and LUCIAN BADIAN Editions in Ottawa, Canada. His music has been recorded and also broadcasted by BBC - Radio 3, Polski Radio, Magyar Radio, Radio 3 Gent, Radio Romania Muzical, Radio Romania Cultural, Radio Iasi, Radio Cluj, SMEI-UCMR, Beogradski Televizja, TV Moldova 1, TVR Cultural, TV SIGMA, TVH2.0, performed in concerts and recitals in France, Belgium, US, Italy, Republic of Moldova, Serbia, Spain, Portugal, The Netherlands, Germany, Belarus, Ukraine, Australia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Albania, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Brazil. Some of them have been recorded on LP, audio cassettes and CD by RADIO ROMANIA, ELECTRECORD, INTERCONT MUSIC, Star Media Music, Editura Muzicală, METTIER Sound & Vision Ltd. (UK), MOVE RECORDS (Australia), NOVA MUSICA (France).

Sorin Lerescu published musical analyses, chronicles, and was invited as lecturer at international festivals, at radio and television broadcasts: Radio Romania Muzical, Radio Romania Cultural, TVR Cultural, Beogradski Televizja, TV Moldova 1, TVH, Radio Parana. 

He currently teaches counterpoint and composition at the Faculty of Arts of the Spiru Haret University in Bucharest. His books, Teatrul instrumental (Instrumental theatre)Sinteze de contrapunct (Counterpoint syntheses)Contrapunct (Counterpoint) were published in 2001, 2003, 2011 in Bucharest by Editura Fundatiei Romania de Maine (România de Mâine Foundation Publishing House). His latest book, In lumea muzicii contemporane (In the world of contemporary music) was published in 2011 by Editura Muzicala in Bucharest.
